European Pirates has today signed a Declaration of Intent with the European Free Alliance (EFA), opening a new phase of dialogue and cooperation between the two European political families.
The declaration establishes a framework for European Pirates and EFA to strengthen their relationship, exchange information, and explore areas where closer cooperation could be mutually beneficial. The two organizations share common interests in areas including democracy and citizen participation, transparency and open government, digital rights, decentralization, diversity and democratic renewal.
The declaration should be seen as the beginning of a longer process of relationship-building. It does not determine what that relationship will ultimately look like. Instead, it creates a framework in which the two organizations can work together, learn from practical cooperation and gradually explore whether there is a basis for closer cooperation in the future.
As part of the process, European Pirates and EFA will establish a working group, with representatives from each organization. The group will provide a structured forum for dialogue, follow the development of the cooperation and identify areas for developing further collaboration.
Initial areas for cooperation may include policy dialogue, coordination and joint initiatives where appropriate, as well as closer contacts between the parties and organizations belonging to the two European political families.
The declaration also allows European Pirates and EFA to explore possibilities for closer organizational cooperation over time. Any such steps would be subject to the statutes, internal procedures and democratic decisions of the organizations concerned.
European Pirates will now begin working with EFA on the next steps in the process.
